A TEAM from H Bty (Ramsay's Troop) from Tidworth based 1st Regiment Royal Horse Artillery are completing a triathlon starting with a 900KM cycle from Edinburgh to Dover, swimming across the Channel and finishing with a 200km run from Calais to Waterloo.

This event will take place over a ten day period from the 18th June -28th June. The soldiers have been in training since the beginning of the year.

Each individual taking part has a target of £500 to raise along the way and fundraising has been ongoing, the latest effort by packing bags at Tesco in Trowbridge raised an amazing £1843.06.

The swimmers have been training at the Cotswold Water Park and the cyclists are now doing rides of 100 miles to prepare.

This event is to celebrate the life of Major William Norman Ramsay and the troops who fought and died in the battle of Waterloo. Further to this they are raising money in support of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

Waterloo revisited

A PARTY of officers, warrant officers and SNCO’s from 1RHA recently travelled to the battlefields of Waterloo in Belgium.

The battlefield tour was in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, which saw The Chestnut Troop, H Battery and O/HQ (The Rocket) Battery firing in support of Lord Wellington’s European coalition.

The group joined members of other artillery regiments in tracing the footsteps of Captain Mercer, the name of who G Battery (Mercers Troop), 7 RHA still hold.

They visited the farms at Hougoumont, La Haye Saint and Papelotte, where both French and Anglo-Dutch troops were stationed. The Battery Captain of the Chestnut Troop was hopeful of finding a cannonball at one of these locations – but was only rewarded with a “vintage” button.

The run up to Waterloo was also studied, with the Battle of Quatre Bras and the Battle of Ligny focussed on in detail.
