RUNNING in the Alps, a family fun day and mountain climbing are just a few of the events being organised by Journal readers in aid of the Stars Appeal Breast Cancer Unit Campaign.

The campaign launched by Salisbury District Hospital’s charity in September aims to raise £750,000 for a dedicated breast care unit.

Over the months hundreds and hundreds of people have taken part in fundraising events and activities.

On Saturday, a family fun day is taking place at Lifestyle Fitness, Avon Valley College, Durrington from 12pm to 4pm.

Attractions include bouncy castles, face painting, a dog display and an army assault course and vehicles as well as Zorb Football, craft stalls, auctions and competitions.

Matthew Sinclair from Lifestyle Fitness said: “We held a similar event last year in aid of Lucy’s Days Out and this year we have decided to hold the event in aid of The Stars Appeal and their current Breast Cancer Unit Campaign.

“It is a cause very close to many people and having a dedicated unit in Salisbury will make a huge difference to those needing treatment and their families.”

In August, Pete Bott is aiming to run 53k in the Alps from Orsieres in Switzerland to Chamonix in France in less than 14.5 hours.

The 31-year-old, who lives in Salisbury, said: “There are some things that you never forget.

One of those things for me was my wife, at the age of 26, telling me she had breast cancer.

“During her treatment Jo was looked after by the incredible staff at Salisbury District Hospital and Southampton General.

“Since the end of her active treatment in 2011 she has worked to help raise awareness and fundraise to support people who find themselves in a similar situation.

“Now it’s my turn to help.”

Up until now, Pete has only done half marathons and in 2011, he broke his ankle in a climbing accident being told he may never run on it again.

But determined to overcome the injury, he is now not only out to tackle more difficult terrain than he has in the past but is also running further than he has ever before.

Last month, a group of members from B-fit Bootcamp decided to take the challenge of trekking up Mount Snowdon for a personal challenge and also to raise money for the new breast unit.

Raising more than £3,000, the group included an 18-month-old baby and two dogs.
