WORK could soon start on renovating a historic church after a ‘tremendous’ last push saw thousands of pounds donated.

But while much of the money has now been raised, the future of Bemerton St John Church still hangs in the balance with a crucial grant not being decided until Salisbury City Council meets next week.

Rector of Bemerton, Reverend Simon Woodley said: “The community response has been fantastic and quite moving.

“People have been so generous, many have given in memory of loved ones who were connected to St John’s church.

“The project has raised more than £32k of the £40k so desperately needed. Phase 1 of the renovations could start soon – but only if the council agrees a crucial grant next week.

“The council held an extraordinary meeting and came out to see us which was really great but it will have go through Monday’s Planning and Transport Committee and then to full council on July 13.

“If this grant doesn’t come in, the project could stall at the last second. Years of hard work from local people will be lost – and a beautiful church boarded up forever.”

Two weeks ago the Final 40 campaign was launched to raise the final £40k needed.

Rev Woodley said: “We are putting name plaques on chairs for donors and if we go ahead we’ll be collecting in the pledges in the next few weeks.

“We need every penny as we think about raising £200k for Phases 2 and 3, which include the toilets and kitchen. But the good news is we hope to be starting soon, and the community and school will have this building back again.”

Anyone who would like to donate can go to crowdfunder.co.uk/st-johns-place-an-exciting-community-hub or make a cheque payable to Bemerton Community Ltd, and send to The Treasurer, 83 Lower Rd, Salisbury SP2 9NH.
