AFTER months of searching, a Cub Scout group based in the city are in danger of closing unless a new leader is found.

Sandy McNeilly will step down as leader of 6 Salisbury Air Scouts in September after five years in charge to spend more time with her family. Yet the “vibrant” pack of 24 Cub Scouts is under threat because nobody has stepped forward to lead them despite searching for nearly a year.

The new group leader can be anyone aged 18 or over and full training is provided which can be used as part of a Open University degree.

Overall group leader Di Bayford said: “We have plenty of parent volunteers but we do not have anybody who is willing to take up the actual running of the group.

“You get an awful lot of fun out of it. It is about the watching the development of the young people, seeing them go through the group right up to Scouts.

“It is quite an exciting time to be joining the Scouts because we are to launch a new programme and 2016 will be the 100th anniversary of Cub Scouting so lots of activities will be happening.

“It doesn’t have to be one person, it could be two people who might share responsibility. We just need somebody with lots of enthusiasm.”

With waiting lists at surrounding groups already full, parents worry that if the group closes the Cubs will not be able to get into another pack. In addition without the Cubs coming through it could have a knock on effect on the Scout numbers.

Sandy said: “They to get to everything and anything the Cubs do. You can get involved once all the children have had a go. I have done the leap of faith, camping, orienteering amongst other things.”

“As Air Scouts if anybody likes planes the leaders can have a go going up,” Di added. “I have recently got braver and I have been flying in a light aircraft, I have been flying in a glider and it has been amazing.”
