PLANS for a new supermarket at Bishopdown which is set to bring 350 jobs to the city will go to the vote next week.

The ASDA, which will be situated off London Road, will include room for 274 car parking spaces and a petrol station.

It is a slightly reduced plan in size from what was originally proposed and is being supported by Salisbury City Council. Wiltshire Council says that the Tesco Extra, Waitrose and the city centre Sainsbury’s are all trading above benchmark levels with the city in need of a new supermarket.

They also hope by diverting customers away from Tesco it could help alleviate traffic problems on Southampton Road.

ASDA wants to open the site 24 hours a day something which drew concerns from neighbours. Laverstock and Ford Parish Council opposed the 24-hour plan whilst Winterbourne Parish Council were concerned about possible increase in traffic congestion.

Councillors at the Strategic Planning Committee will choose between two slightly different proposals with one including a cycle path entrance off Green Lane which was added after consultations with residents.

As part of legal agreements for the supermarket ASDA hasve agreed to contribute £350,000 to improve the bus services running towards the site.

The officers have recommended for the proposal to be approved.
