FULL cast has been announced for a revival of Noël Coward’s champagne-fuelled comedy Fallen Angels at Salisbury Playhouse in September.

Jackie Clune (The Vote, Henry IV, Mamma Mia! and Billy Elliot the Musical) will play Julia with Carolyn Backhouse (Coronation Street and Midsomer Murders) appearing as her best friend and drinking partner Jane.

William Travis, whose television credits include Coronation Street, plays Fred, with Callum Coates, Lucy Thackeray and Gregory Finnegan, who appeared in Salisbury Playhouse’s production of Northanger Abbey, completing the cast.

When Fallen Angels premiered in 1925 it caused outrage for its references to sex out of wedlock and women’s drunken behaviour. Critics branded Coward’s play “vulgar, shocking and obscene” and Fallen Angels was not revived until after the Second World War.

As attitudes changed, later productions were hailed as “witty and euphoric” with Coward praised for his sharp observations about society, marriage and sexual double standards.

This Salisbury Playhouse Production is directed by Jessica Swale (Bedlam, The Belle’s Stratagem and writer of award-nominated Blue Stockings) and designed by Simon Kenny. Oozing 1920s style and sophistication – until things get riotously out of hand – Fallen Angels is a sparkling comedy.

Fallen Angels comes to the Main House at Salisbury Playhouse from Thursday, September 10 to Saturday October 3. Evening performances start at 7.30pm with matinees at 2.15pm.
