THREE cars crashed in the same spot this weekend — in a 30mph zone.

The incidents all happened on the London Road, just past the railway bridge, at what has become an accident blackspot in recent years.

One happened on Friday night, the other two on Sunday evening, bringing the total to 19 crashes in 12 months.

Bertie Ledingham, who lives nearby, said: "The residents of Glenmore Road are very concerned as the statistics are clearly showing evidence that this piece of highway is dangerous and it is only a matter of time before there will be a fatality.

"Any pedestrian who happened to be walking on the pavement at the wrong time would stand no chance."

The council said it would resurface the road this summer but now residents are demanding to know what action will be taken and when.

Mr Ledingham said: "What is Wiltshire Council going to do about the issue?

"We are told that resurfacing is planned but when and what traffic calming measures are going to be put in place?

"It is time someone on the Council took responsibility for the work needed to slow the traffic going north out of the city.

"Three accidents in two days is a serious problem."

On a number of occasions, cars have smashed through the fence of a property belonging to Mencap which is home to vulnerable adults, and Mr Ledingham said residents were becoming traumatised.

Police were called at 7.17pm Sunday, when it is believed the driver of a grey Fiat Stilo lost control of the vehicle on the bend. Nobody was injured.

Then at 9.12pm on Sunday police were again called following an initial report of a single vehicle crash on London Road.

It is believed the vehicle’s steering did not work and as a result the driver mounted the kerb.

The driver was not injured and arranged recovery for the vehicle.

Police have no record of being called to a crash on Friday night.

Wiltshire Council has been approached for comment.
