MORMONS in Salisbury hosted a Musical Summer Soiree on Saturday in aid of the Gurkha Welfare Trust’s Nepal Earthquake Appeal.

More than 100 people attended and a collection taken on the night raised £518, which Barclays Bank will match.

Salisbury Mayor Michael Roberts spoke of the important local historical connection with the Gurkha Regiment.

The concert featured modern, classical, instrumental and vocal music and took place at the Church’s brand new meeting-house in Westside Close, Old Sarum.

The event was organised by local church member Theresa McGowan, who said: "I went out to Nepal twice, firstly in 1995 for a three-week trek with Bryanston school.

"I promised the Sherpas that I would come back and teach them.

"The following summer a friend and I went out and taught English and Music at two schools and in the Latter-day Saint church building.

"So for me it was really important to use my musical talents and musical connections to raise funds for the earthquake victims.”
