LONG-serving steward at the Lake Estate Club, Norman Crocker, has retired - at the age of 80.

Norman worked at the club in the Woodford Valley for more than 24 years, and pulled his last pint at a retirement party thrown in his honour.

During his years at steward, he welcomed many new members through the doors, and his most famous customer was rock icon Sting, who lives at nearby Lake House, and occasionally pops into the club for a game of snooker with staff.

Norman thought he would be bowing out quietly from his steward's job, but club chairman, Andy Rhind-Tutt, and other committee members had different ideas and arranged a big farewell bash for him.

The party included a buffet meal with retirement cake, live music with Mickey Fudge, and a "This is Your Life" event, tracing Norman's years at Lake.

Afterwards, he was presented with honorary life membership of the club, a garden seat and a cheque for £500.

Norman now plans a quiet retirement with wife Peggy and tending his garden.

Meanwhile, the club is seeking a replacement part-time steward to fill Norman's shoes. Anyone interested should contact club secretary, Henry Dunlop, on 01722 782351.
