TORY candidate Atiqul Hoque has won a seat on Wiltshire Council tonight.

The Salisbury restaurateur and city councillor won the ward of St Edmund and Milford by 163 votes, the Journal understands.

Atiqul Hoque said: "I am honoured that the people of the St Edmund and Milford Ward in Salisbury have elected me as their Councillor.

"It is an immense privilege to be able to serve our community in this way.

"There has not been a Conservative representative in this area for over 30 years and I am very glad that the people have put their faith in me and the party I represent."

The by-election was forced by the resignation of Lib Dem Dr Helena McKeown last month.

The turnout was reported to be 1,163 (31.87%) and Atiqul received 425 votes with the Lib Dems in second place.
