THE Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire (PCC) has confirmed plans to raise the precept by 1.9 per cent — the maximum allowed.

The £3.12 a year increase had been under consultation and was confirmed by the Police and Crime Panel at a meeting on Thursday.

It means that the rate for the police element of council tax for an average band D property will be £167.10 for 2016-17, up from £163.98 in 2015-16.

PCC Angus Macpherson said that the increase will provide an extra £769,000 for the force.

He said: “I was pleased that we have had a positive response from the public throughout the consultation; at area board and locality meetings, through social media and the website.

“The consultation clearly showed that the public are in favour of the increase which will be used to help maintain local community policing."

Mr Macpherson added that despite the increase the force had a funding gap of around £2.6million and he was working towards securing a fairer deal from central government.
