A MAJOR with the Bulford-based 43 (Wessex) Brigade has been awarded an MBE for his leadership of the Army's cadet groups and dedication to improving the lives of young people in this region.

Major Mike Pether, 59, joined the Royal Army Ordnance Corps in 1968 and left the Regular Army after 16 years' service to join the Territorial Army in 1984.

He started working with the TA in Aldershot and joined 43 (Wessex) Brigade, then based in Exeter, in 1992.

Since then, he has put in 14 years, work with the Army Cadet Force (ACF) in the south west of England and is widely regarded as "Mr Ten Tors" as he has been responsible for the planning and preparation of every Ten Tors expedition since 1992.

Major Pether's job involves working with 180 ACF detachments and 5,200 cadets across the region. He is responsible for organising and providing all of their financial support, rations, and transport and training facilities, and is a central figure in the annual inspections and reports.

In recognition of this work, the citation said: "Generations of cadets, not only those now in responsible positions in each of the Armed Forces, but also those who have gone on to distinguished careers in business, owe much to Major Pether."

Major Pether said of meeting the Queen at Buckingham Palace: "I was surprised at how well briefed she was.

"She knew I worked with cadets and also that I was involved with Ten Tors. I loved the moment, although I was a little nervous."
