A WEBSITE set up by Wiltshire County Council has come top in an independent survey of online resources for young people.

www.sparksite.co.uk was launched last November offering information and advice.

It combines a website and online radio station run by young people.

The Youth Matters Project Team, part of Bristol City Council's children and young peoples service, held a consultation day in March for young people in Bristol. As part of this, around 50 participants aged 13-19 used a number of websites set up by local authorities and aimed at young people.

They then gave comments on the layout, ease of use and quality of information.

The results put Wiltshire's Sparksite well ahead of other websites from places such as Leeds, Nottingham and Bristol.

The voters said they would use Sparksite repeatedly if they lived in the county because of its good design, easy navigation and the amount of information it contains.

The Sparksite web pages are more than just about playing music. Much like the popular MySpace site, they are also a virtual home for young people in Wiltshire.

Sparksite allows them access to news and information in their local area.

There are regularly updated details on events which young people can take part in across the county, and a wealth of detail on local services.

There are also links to sites which can help listeners with everything from exams to personal problems.

Jo Kerr, from the county council's youth development team, is the website co-ordinator.

She said: "This is a huge vote of confidence for the young people who have put so much time and effort into this website.

"One of the problems in Wiltshire has been that young people have often not been aware of the existence of recreational and leisure activities available to them in their communities.

"Sparksite helps bridge that gap and it's great our efforts have been praised. We're certainly finding the constantly updated, fresh and interesting content keeps people coming back again and again."
