POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was assaulted during a robbery in Amesbury.

The incident happened at 3pm on Wednesday when the victim was walking on common land behind Fargo Road.

He was approached by two men, who initially engaged in conversation, before one of them hit him over the head with a makeshift walking stick, causing him to fall to the ground.

They stole his mobile phone and then ran off in the direction of the A303.

The first suspect is described as a white man, in his late 20s, around 6ft tall, of a slim build and wearing a black hoody, green and black combat-style trousers and carrying a grey rucksack.

The second man was also white, in his late 20s, of slim build, around 5ft 11ins tall, and wearing a grey hoody and dark trousers.

They were possibly Eastern European.
