PLANS have been put forward to reduce the speed limit on a stretch of road in Tidworth from 60mph to 40mph.

A consultation is underway and residents are invited to comment on the proposals, which would be for the A338 Salisbury Road, south of the junctions with Church Lane and South Lane.

Details of the proposed scheme will be available at Tidworth Library, Tidworth Leisure Centre between 10am to 5pm Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 2pm to 7pm Tuesday and Thursday and 10am to 1pm on Saturday.

The consultation ends on July 18.

The proposals have come about as a result of the Army rebasing and the military housing being built. A roundabout will also be provided in Ludgershall Road for the new link road behind the Persimmon development.

Wiltshire Councillor for Tidworth, Cllr Mark Connolly, speaking about the speed limit proposals, said: “I am very much in favour of it. It slows down traffic and is a good thing.”

“I would encourage people to look at the plans.”

He said residents can expect a lot of changes to the town’s road network in the future. As part of improvement schemes the mini roundabouts on the A338 will be replaced by a single roundabout, with the St Andrews Road junction being moved away from the Esso garage. And traffic lights will be installed at the A338/Meerut Road.

The Hampshire Cross traffic lights will be upgraded and The Ram junction will be widened to improve traffic flow.

Cllr Connolly added: “If we didn’t do all these improvements the place would become log jammed.”

He said the infrastructure had to be improved with the large number of houses being built in the area as part of army rebasing. “It is something that has got to be done to keep us moving.”
