RECORD numbers turned out to Walk for Wards at Wilton House yesterday (Sunday) with the total number of pledges reaching £125k.

Formula 1 legend Murray Walker and Nick Jenkins from Dragons’ Den attended the event with Walker doing the count down from ten to his famous Go Go Go to start the walk.

This year 2,181 registered to take part in the day compared to last year's record of 2,005 people.

Many of those become involved in the annual event to thank the hospital for the care that they, or a loved one, has received or to dedicate their walk in memory of a friend, parent, sibling or child.

A moment of silence was held before the start in honour of those who have lost someone.

Welcoming everyone to the event, Toddy Westropp, chairman of the Stars Appeal, said: "I want to say a special thanks to all of you for turning out today to support our hospital and its charity, the Stars Appeal.

"I know you will all have your own very special reason for taking part today. Between you, you are supporting vital work in many different wards and departments.

"I want you to know that every penny you raise will make a real difference. To give just a few examples, your support will help to provide cancer patients on the Pembroke Unit and new Breast Unit with extra support, treat premature babies using the latest equipment and help stroke patients relearn lost skills."

She added: "We’d like to thank everyone who participated ,all those who sponsored them and the many, many people and organisations who make Walk for Wards possible especially our hosts Lord and Lady Pembroke, our principal sponsors Salisbury Reds and our marshals - the Rotary Club of Wilton."

Participants in the walk chose to walk either a 10k, 5k or 3k.
