PLANS to build two new restaurants in the centre of Salisbury have been unveiled.

Developers are keen to “unlock the potential” of Avon Row – the riverside walkway behind New Look that links Fisherton Street and Crane Street.

A vacant unit to the south of the former Woolworth’s building, plus the former Allied Garden Centre building, will become new eateries, if plans are approved.

The developer, Threadneedle Property Investments, said in its planning application to Wiltshire Council: “The River Avon, where it borders the site, presents an extremely pleasant environment that is currently under utilised.

“The river path area is owned and maintained by Salisbury City Council, it’s potential for public use and enjoyment is clearly unrealised at present.”

It said the plans would add to the quality of the surrounding conservation area, and the city as a whole.

If the bid is successful, two restaurants will face a new “Piazza”.

The western part of the building will be demolished and it would be extended to the south. Number 98 Crane Street would also be knocked down and replaced with a new gatehouse to allow access to the site.

The developer said this would not unduly affect neighbouring number 96, which is part of a listed terrace.

The restaurants would have a curved glass front, with a semi-circular outdoor seating area.

Four trees will be removed as part of the scheme.

“Besides providing a pleasant environment, it will enhance the riverside walk in general, rejuvenate the site and encourage people to visit and appreciate the riverside, which will have a positive impact on the general area,” said the developer.

“We believe this proposal offers improvements to the locality and is in accordance with the aims and policies applicable to Salisbury Town Centre and the Salisbury Conservation Area.

“It will unlock the potential of this section of the riverside and allow increased numbers to benefit from the amenity that it provides.”

Wiltshire Council will decide whether to grant consent.
