A CITY centre street was closed in both directions yesterday after a teenage girl climbed to the top of the former BHS building.

Police were called to New Street at 11.38am after reports of a distressed girl threatening to jump off the roof.

Negotiators were soon brought to the scene, where police say a 17-year-old girl was talked down by around 2pm and taken into safety.

Her mental health was assessed and she was allowed to go home.

This follows a similar incident in which a 17-year-old girl climbed to the top of the Old George Mall car park on September 1.

It is understood the two girls were friends.

Inspector Pete Sparrow of Salisbury Police said: "In the end the negotiators worked realy well nand brought her down. No one was hurt. There was disruption and we can only apologise for that. It was taken seriously and resolved."

Insp Sparrow added that the circumstances behind the incident were being investigated in the hope of trying to prevent anything similar happening again in future.
