A VANDAL smashed the windscreen and bodywork of a car with a hammer, causing thousands of pounds' worth of damage.

It happened between 10.30pm and 10.55pm on Wednesday when the Ford Kuga was parked in Devizes Road, Salisbury.

The wing mirror, passenger window and bonnet were also damaged.

It is believed the suspect was travelling in a people carrier which turned right into Devizes Road from India Avenue and then onto Sarum Close.

The suspect is male, and was wearing a hooded top and light-coloured tracksuit bottoms.

PC Eleanor Darcy said: "This has understandably been an upsetting incident for the owner of the vehicle. At approximately 10.40pm, the man drove out of India Avenue, and then parked up and approached the victim's vehicle. After checking nobody was around, he caused thousands of pounds of damage to the car.

"When he drove off, he had no lights on his vehicle. There were a number of road users in the area. I would like to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area around this time to get in touch with police if they have not already done so."

Anyone with information should call police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
