THE sun may not come out tomorrow but it's certainly shining in the City Hall this week as Musical Theatre Salisbury (MTS) perform the hit musical Annie.

It's a hard knock life for Annie and her fellow orphan friends under the guardianship of heartless Miss Hannigan. Luckily she gets her break, falling into the home and heart of billionnaire Oliver Warbucks.

Lara Makin was adorable as young Annie and her 'blue team' of orphans all had stunning voices and very few nerves showed.

Kate Sheppard was hugely entertaining as the old lush Miss Hannigan, while the stunning voice of Jordan Leech stood out in her role as Grace, Warbucks' PA. I was initially unsure about Russell Haugh's portrayal of 'Daddy' Warbucks but he grew on me throughout the performance and I was convinced by the second act.

MTS, formerly known as Salisbury Amateur Operatic Society, are anything but amateur. There were some beautiful harmonies throughout the performance and I particularly enjoyed the rendition of Tomorrow during the cabinet meeting.

All the actors, including the children, spoke (and sang) in New York accents throughout the play, which is no mean feat.

Musical director Liz Weager and her ten-piece orchestra were a euphonious pleasure.

Finally, a mention must go to Guinness the dog, who was very well behaved as Sandy and seemed to be loving the final applause so much he didn't want to leave the stage.

From stage design to costumes, lighting, props, dancing, acting, amazing singing and, of course, the wonderful orchestra all these things added up to an incredibly entertaining and professional production.
