Hospital's heroes rewarded in Striving for Excellence Awards

There were 16 categories in all, and award nominations were made by patients, staff and volunteers, with members of the public voting for the winners in the Service Improvement categories.

Winners and the highly commended were presented with certificates and flowers by chief executive Peter Hill and chairman Nick Marsden at a special ceremony at the hospital.

Among this year’s winners were hospital porter Ebrima Markess who won the Unsung Hero Award for “being kind and compassionate and going beyond his duties for people in need”, the paediatric diabetes team for increased support and reduced diabetic admissions and Ellie Gibson in informatics who “worked tirelessly” to support staff who had visual problems and needed specialist IT support as part of the new electronic patient record implementation.

Mr Hill said: “Each year I see so many examples of the outstanding work that takes place across the hospital and the professionalism and commitment which is appreciated by our patients and the local community.

“This year’s awards reflect our core values and behaviours and the principles of striving for excellence, which is fundamental to the clinical care we provide and our patients’ experience.

“The awards represent just a small sample of the fantastic work that takes place right across all our services each year and celebrate all that is good about our hospital and our staff.”

Mr Marsden added: “We have continued to see a number of significant financial and operational challenges, yet staff have provided the very best care that they can for our patients. These awards give us an ideal opportunity to acknowledge the enormous contribution our staff have made to local health services and I’m proud to be able to give our staff the recognition that they deserve for all their efforts this year.”
