A CRASH at a new roundabout was "an accident waiting to happen" according to one Amesbury man.

Police were called to a one car crash at the Longhedge roundabout on the A345 just before 6pm yesterday.

A blue Honda CRV was involved and there were no injuries, but the road was closed temporarily as police attended the scene.

Wiltshire Council approved plans for the new roundabout earlier this year, after Catesby Property won planning permission for nearly 700 new homes as well as a new school, neighbourhood centre and public space at Longhedge.

But Alan Caulfield, Amesbury, said: "It was an accident waiting to happen, I have never seen such a badly designed roundabout and one which for such a long time was left unlit. Even now the deviations to the road layout and the approach islands are left in shadow.

"The A345 is a fast rural road and anybody who doesn't know the road is highly likely to see the islands too late.

"This is not the only road obstruction in the area that has been left unlit and it is about time either the Highways agency, local council or building contractors were held to account over their neglect."
