A LIST of repairs to be carried out on Salisbury’s crumbling streets this year has been published.

Wiltshire Council’s priorities for resurfacing work in the city include a 1km stretch of the A338 Downton Road at Britford, and a 400m section of Brunel Road on Churchfields industrial estate.

Minor repairs are planned for the A30 London Road in Winterslow, Cherry Close in Salisbury, Wain-A-Long Road in Salisbury and the A338 New Bridge Road to Harnham Gyratory.

Wiltshire councillor Richard Clewer, who has been working with the Salisbury Pothole Group to get more problems reported, said Downton Road was “very unstable” and needed a lot of work.

“A lot of people complain about the state of the roads, but they do not report them,” he said. “If they do report them, then we can do something.”

Salisbury Pothole Watch founder Graham Barrett said that some defects that were meant to be on the priority list had disappeared.

A stretch of St Paul’s Road by the Royal Mail sorting office needed urgent attention, he said.

“I have been told numerous times over the past three to four weeks that this road is on the priority resurfacing list. However it was not listed on the schedule.

“I have queried this and I am awaiting an answer.”

Comments and pictures left on the group’s Facebook page highlighted the state of some of the city’s roads.

One woman posted: “Why why why do [Wiltshire Council] keep doing patch up jobs, which then after a short time go back to potholes? Do a proper job in the first place and it’ll last longer.”

City and county councillor John Walsh said every ward had highways problems.

“There are over 600 roads in Salisbury, so the proposed programme is completely inadequate to keep up with their steady deterioration.”

The list will be discussed at the next Salisbury Area Board meeting on March 9.
