A YOUNG lad's "noble" act of charity has been praised by motor racing legend Murray Walker.

Spurred on by the struggles of members of his own family with cancer-related illnesses, 14-year-old Mason Eady opted to have his head shaved in aid of Cancer Research UK.

A large crowd of family, friends and well-wishers - including the veteran Formula One commentator - gathered at Retro Barbers in Fordingbridge on Saturday to witness the deed, which also inspired owner Malcolm Carter to part with his own locks.

"It is something I have thought about for a while now, I just thought I should do it," said Mason, who attends Burgate School.

"I have had friends affected by cancer. It could happen to anyone. And my hair will grow back, but we can raise money for charity."

Mr Walker, who lives near Fordingbridge and is a regular at the barbers, said: "Cancer is a dreadful affliction and I think it is very noble of Mason to have done this.

"I think anyone who makes an effort to raise money for cancer research in this way deserves a round of applause.

"People talk about young people not doing anything these days. He proves them wrong."

Mason has already raised more than £700 for the cause.
