DOWNTON finish the season on a high by beating Andover New Street 2-0, finishing the season in 11th place in the Sydenhams Division One.

Two goals from Ross Bentall were enough for the Robins to continue their fine form ending the season on a five match winning streak.

The Robins were a constant threat with much of the first 45mins spent in the visitors half, with Declan McGregor and Shaun Prentice proving to be a constant threat.

Another excellent passing move saw Prentice through on goal with only the keeper to beat, only to be fouled by the keeper and the rebound was slotted home by Ross Bentall to put the Robins in the lead.

Ben Smith’s side were recharged after the break, and Jamie Waters & Craig Tysons tireless work in the middle of the park paid off after a training ground move Bentall struck again with his second goal of the game on 70 minutes.

From then on the Robins had the game in control and saw the game out in fine fashion enjoying some good possession.

Downton caretaker manager Ben Smith told JournalSport: “The lads have been incredible over the whole season and to finish like we’ve done is a real credit to everyone involved.

“We now have a well-deserved break and a lot of work to do behind the scenes to ensure we are ready to hit the ground running next season.”

Smith also added: “Getting a clean sheet could give us the second best defensive record in the league, also the chance of Team of the month followed by the possibility of getting back into the FA Cup next season.”

Finally he said: “We are still in negotiations to find the new first team manager to work alongside us and the response and interest so far is very positive so no doubt a deal will be done in the next few weeks.”
