FIREFIGHTERS tackled a fire involving two derelict buildings in Old Sarum.

The fire service received a number of calls reporting the incident at Portway just before 4pm today.

A spokesman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two appliances from Salisbury were mobilised and upon arrival assistance was requested and a third appliance was mobilised from Amesbury.

"It was confirmed to be two derelict buildings well alight measuring 12m x 8m and 10m x 6m.

"The fire was extinguished using six breathing apparatus, two hose reels, two main jets and positive pressure ventilation."

Residents were advised to close their windows and doors due to the smoke plume and possible asbestos burning.

The fire is out and the road has been reopened.

The cause of the fire is being treated as suspicious and police and fire investigations are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.
