AMESBURY Carnival brought some movie magic to the town on Saturday and enjoyed a record turnout.

Plenty of familiar characters paraded through the town with costumes inspired by Disney characters, Shrek, and Despicable Me as part of this year's theme At the Movies.

Bournemouth Carnival Band returned but this time dressed as the Batman Band. Last year they performed as Spiderman.

Visitors of all ages enjoyed a packed afternoon of events at the showground, including Ben Hur chariot racing from Gerard Naprous' Devils Horsemen as well as falconry displays.

There was also a funfair, stalls and the hugely popular dog show.

Organiser Phil Monk says the event had its "biggest procession ever" with nearly 1,000 people taking part and this was echoed with the attendance at the showground, which is thought to be about 10,000 people.

"Everything was perfect," he said. "In terms of the numbers in the procession and at the showground we had record numbers of people taking part."

The hot weather brought out the crowds for the event. However, the heat did impact on the number of entries to the dog show, which were down.

Phil said: "We had a huge variety in the procession and an excellent show. A lot of people had a lot of fun and hopefully we will be able make a sizeable donation to Hope for Tomorrow."
