A TEAM of archaeologists have been uncovering the secrets the Old Sarum landscape holds.

The Old Sarum Landscapes project is a collaboration between Southampton University and Swansea University. This week Kristian Strutt and Alex Langlands along with a team of students have been carrying out archaeological work at the site.

Kristian said: “What we are trying to do is open a new chapter on the history and archaeology of Old Sarum and understand more about the development on the site in terms of the periods of its occupation right the way through from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages and beyond, and the landscape context.”

The team have been making use of geophysical techniques to survey what lies under the surface.

They have uncovered a 13th century pitcher, a horse bridal and a whetstone used for sharpening knives as well as evidence of ancient settlements. Other finds uncovered included items left behind by soldiers, such as toothpaste and tinned foods including corned beef and fish paste.
