VETERANS gathered in the Guildhall Square to pay their respects at a ceremony on Tuesday.

Victory over Japan (VJ) Day is the anniversary marking the Allied victory over Japan in the Second World War, and the Royal British Legion (RBL) led the remembrance ceremony.

The Mayor of Salisbury and seven city councillors attended, as well as remaining Burma Star holders from Wiltshire regiments.

Robert Giddings, Salisbury RBL president, organised the event and said it was “very, very good”.

“I was extremely pleased to see the mayor and the city council taking it so well.

“I’d also like to say a big thank you to John Grigsby, who acted as RBL president for the day while I carried a Wiltshire regiment standard.”
