A SOUTH Wilts Grammar School pupil is celebrating after receiving the highest marks possible across the board for her GCSE exams.

Erica Humbey opened her results last Thursday to see 13 A*s, including top grade 9s in two English papers and maths. She also received an A^ distinction in further maths.

The 16-year-old also studied geography, religious studies, French, biology, chemistry, physics, economics, computing, and Latin – which she studied as an extra subject, with only one lesson a week.

“Having been predicted these grades, it felt as though I would never be able to surprise anyone or excel beyond what was expected of me. But in fact to have achieved these results is more than I expected of myself, and I’m chuffed. The amount of weight that has been lifted now that I have received my results is more than worth the hours of work and travel,” said Erica.

To celebrate Erica enjoyed a meal with her family and friend at their home in All Cannings near Devizes.

Celebrating in her success was dad Martin, mum Caroline Webb, but the family is unsure where Erica gets her academic ability.

“It is fantastic, she deserves the results as she worked very hard,” Caroline said. “She is so academic and does all of this herself.”

Caroline said it wasn’t always easy for Erica as she has to travel three hours each day to get to the school.

“It was a lot of work to get to the results and I live quite far away from the school so I had a lot of work to do and fitting in travelling as well.” Erica added.

She will now go onto study economics and maths, and further her love of languages and words by studying English literature and Latin, which will be split across the South Wilts Grammar School, Godolphin and Bishop Wordsworth School.

“I love the language side of things but I’m not so fond of modern foreign languages and Latin encompasses all the things I enjoy.”

Instead of having a rest during the summer break before starting her A-levels Erica took on an ancient Greek course to increase her breadth of knowledge.

“I felt so at home, I just loved being around people with similar interests to me and the course solidifies what I want to do.”

After taking her A-levels Erica hopes to be able to go to university to study classics.
