A SALISBURY pub that has been shut for nearly two years could be set to re-open after plans for refurbishing it were submitted to the council.

A planning application was sent to Wiltshire Council in July, on behalf of Star Pubs and Bars Ltd, for the Coach and Horses in Winchester Street.

The application is for a full internal refurbishment and “enhancement” of the pub’s garden.

Star Pubs and Bars, the property owners, are carrying out the refurbishment as part of a deal with a new leaseholder.

The pub closed in July 2015 but looked to be saved when businessman Andy Grigg took control.

Mr Grigg, who also ran Cranes Wine Cafe, told the Journal in August 2015 that he took over the pub to save it from “rack and ruin”.

But he was forced to close it three months later, after failing attract enough customers.

The application is for new floors throughout, new feature walls and exposed brickwork, redecoration of existing walls and ceilings, new sanitary ware and redecoration of the toilets, an overhaul of the existing bar and refurbishment of the kitchen and beer cellar.

In the pub’s garden the existing bar will be altered and new seating structures could be installed.

An architect’s report said: “The design and choice of materials proposed take into consideration the status of the building as a Grade II listed building and its settings within the conservation area. The proposed alterations will be sympathetic in nature and have no detrimental impact on the listed building or conservation area.

“The proposals should be viewed as a chance to reinstate an important local landmark and social hub within the local community and reopen one of Britain’s many closed pubs.”
