A PRIMARY school pupil has made a splash by winning an extreme reading challenge.

Six-year-old Zackary Howells, who is in Year 2 at Bulford St Leonard’s, won the competition with a photograph of himself reading a book underwater.

The extreme reading challenge was held across the Salisbury Plain Academies primary schools over the summer holidays involving children from from Bulford St Leonard’s, St Michael’s Figheldean and Durrington All Saints.

The pupils got into the spirit of the competition getting photographed reading in some unusual locations including underground caves in Mexico and the foot of a volcano in Tenerife.

Zachary said: “I loved reading underwater because I’ve never done it before.

“It was quite tricky to read because I had to hold the book and read through the plastic at the same time.”

Zachary has been given a £30 book voucher for winning the competition. He said: “I’m so happy I won. I love reading because books are interesting especially books that make me laugh.”
