A CHIHUAHUA who found herself in need of a new home after her owner died has become the 300th canine to be rehomed by Dogs Trust Salisbury.

Lulu's owner had signed up to Dogs Trust’s Canine Care Card scheme, a free service which helps dogs find a home when their owners pass away, and was placed into temporary foster care through the charity’s Home From Home Scheme.

As well as being the centre's 300th dog to find a new home this year the four-year-old Chihuahua is also the 50th dog to be rehomed through the foster scheme in 2017.

Emma Sainsbury, Home From Home co-ordinator at Dogs Trust Salisbury, said: “The home from home scheme has been running for just over a year now and is perfect for dogs like Lulu who are missing a home environment and would love to be part of a family again; even if it is only temporarily while they wait for their forever homes.

Dogs who go into foster care always have a good chance of finding permanent homes quickly as our foster carers are in a great position to offer potential owners valuable insight into how a dog settles in a home, which can help us match dogs with the right owners.

“Since the scheme began last July, our dedicated foster carers have given almost 1,300 days of their time to care for more than 90 dogs in their homes. Having foster carers on board means we can care for even more dogs as every dog in foster care frees up a kennel for another dog in need.”

Emma says there are 23 foster families who have come on board since the scheme began but she is always looking for more foster carers to call upon.
