HEAVY horse ploughmen John McDermott and Martin Kerswell from Breamore competed in the 67th British National Ploughing Championships this weekend at Bishops Lydeard, near Taunton.
Apart from the main prize of Champion Horse Ploughman, they were also competing against eighteen other ploughmen and women for the titles of best decorated team of horses, best working pair of horses and best horse ploughman. Competitors came from across the country, including the Isle of Sheppy in Kent, Crickhowell in Powys, Wales, Stanley in County Durham, Devon and Cornwall.
In class 7 horse ploughing, general purpose, Martin came second with 266 points and John came third with 249 points. And in class 14 horse ploughing, oat seed furrow work, Martin again came second with 266 points and John came fifth with 199 points.
