A GROUP of elderly residents are calling for action to sort their “dirty” and “dilapidated” sheltered housing estate.

The residents from Addison Square, in Durrington, are urging Wiltshire Council to take notice of their pleas for a catalogue of problems to be sorted.

For the last few years the neighbours have complained to the authority about the worsening state of their accommodation, but despite promises they say nothing has been done.

In a letter to the council, the neighbours say: “We are saying that after years of complaining we have had enough!

“The overall maintenance of our communal garden, hedges and paths is virtually non-existent.

“Our walkways have broken, dirty and dilapidated corrugated fibreglass roofing that severely restricts light into our homes.

“Three of us have slipped on the moss laden paths and the weeds are out of control.”

The residents have now asked for the help of Wiltshire Councillor for Durrington Graham Wright.

Cllr Wright said: “I have been talking with residents who also have issues with a lack of co-operation from Wiltshire Council in helping with storage facilities for their mobility scooters.

“This was built in the 60s and the investment hasn’t happened since so it has gradually been left to decline.

“In an age when Wiltshire Council encourage all of us to increase our ‘health and wellbeing’, leaving Addison Square residents with obvious hazards, a general lack of simple maintenance and decreasing their sense of wellbeing does nothing for their self esteem or the reputation of Wiltshire Council.”

He added that the estate has become “depressing” and “prison-like”.

Despite concerns from residents the council has said that has it completed over 130 repairs in the last two years costing more than £18,400.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman added: “We have also renewed a kitchen, two fire doors and replaced a number of pull cords. Roofline works including guttering and downpipes are due to take place in the next financial year, which is estimated to cost approximately £35,000.

“Grounds maintenance work is carried out at all of our sheltered schemes, the current schedule consists of weekly grass cutting from mid-March until the end of November. Hedges and shrubs are maintained once a year during the winter.”
