CCTV has been released after a shop worker was assaulted when thieves attempted to break into a safe.

Police say two males entered the Co-op in Wilton Road, Salisbury at about 8.40pm on Saturday, January 6 and assaulted a member of staff. Their attempt to break into the safe was unsuccessful and they left the store at 8.42pm.

They left on foot before getting into a vehicle waiting outside. The vehicle is described as a black hatchback and drove off in the direction of Wilton.

The store assistant was left shaken but uninjured after the incident.

The CCTV shows one of the suspects, believed to be male, wearing black clothing, with black Nike trousers and red gloves.

Police have been conducting house to house inquiries in the area, alongside automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and forensic work, to try to identify the burglars.

DC Leanne Thomas, from Salisbury CID, said: “We understand that the CCTV footage does not reveal much, but we are hoping that the suspect’s red gloves and Nike trousers might jog someone’s memory and lead to an arrest.

“This was a frightening incident and, though the member of staff involved was not injured, she has been left understandably shaken.

“We would like to reassure the people of Salisbury that these are rare incidents and we are conducting a thorough investigation to try and identify the suspects.”

Anyone with information, including anyone who was in the Wilton Road area on the night of the incident or might have dash cam footage of the vehicle involved, is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101 and quote crime reference number 54180001867.
