FIREFIGHTERS from Salisbury, Wilton and Amesbury joined crews from Hampshire to battle a thatch fire in Monxton near Andover last night.

More than 70 firefighters from Hampshire and Dorset and Wiltshire fire and rescue service dealt with the fire in the thatched roofs of adjoining cottages.

Police and the ambulance service were also in attendance. No-one was injured.

Fire crews were still on the scene this morning.

The incident was report at about 7.50pm last night.

The fire started in the thatched roof of the properties and spread to the two floors.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service says the fire has "devastated" the two historic, period cottages.

But, the work of fire prevented the flames spreading to another neighbouring property.

An investigation will now take place to establish the cause of the fire.
