FACTORY bosses have won permission to build homes on a site in Wilton after a fight of more than 15 years – saving up to 90 jobs.

E V Naish originally applied in 2003 to build 62 homes and demolish its unsuitable site and it was allowed by the then Salisbury District Council – but the consent lapsed after no work was carried out.

The firm returned with another scheme in 2017 to reduce the number houses by one but it was also rejected by Wiltshire councillors.

It appealed that decision and now the Planning Inspectorate has ruled in E V Naish’s favour.

A report by inspector R J Jackson stated that there were “no realistic alternatives to bring forward the regeneration benefits of the proposal”.

Gavin Hall, director of Savills Planning, said: “Over the years we have worked with the council and with statutory consultees to finalise the plans for the site. Although disappointed by the committee outcome last year, we continued to work with officers to ensure all concerns were addressed and to finalise the legal agreement.

“I am very pleased with the inspector’s conclusions about the site, and look forward to seeing this sustainable development progress, and Naish Felts Ltd and Wallgate Ltd being able to grow and expand locally.”

The applications were initially refused by councillors who stated that the development would have an effect on those living nearby in terms of noise and disturbance from traffic, along with concerns about affordable housing and infrastructure.

But Mr Jackson said that residents living close to the site would not be “adversely affected” by the amount of traffic from the site.

He added: “While there would be an increase in noise and disturbance from vehicles accessing the appeals site I am satisfied there would be sufficient separation to the adjoining properties.”

Mr Jackson also said that in some areas the development would enhance the living conditions of site neighbours.

And he said the site was “physically constrained”, particularly in terms of access, which makes it “less than suitable” for the company’s use and expansion plans.

Director Geoff Naish added: “Now that the appeal has been granted, E V Naish Ltd will be able to move forward to establish a new local modern site appropriate to the current and future requirements of both Naish Felts Ltd and Wallgate Ltd.”
