PEDESTRIANS are reportedly risking their lives by crossing the busy A303 because an underpass has been flooded for over a week.

The tunnel that leads under the dual carriageway at Countess Roundabout is unusable because of the high levels of water.

It is believed the flood stretches about 20 metres and is around a foot deep in places.

Wiltshire councillor for Amesbury Fred Westmoreland said he believed recent snow may be to blame.

“The thing is there has been a pump operated there in the past and when it has conked out it has been replaced,” he said.

The tunnel has now been officially closed by Wiltshire Council after the Salisbury Journal informed local councillors of the issue.

A spokesman for Highways England said: “Highways England was on site as soon as we became aware of the issue.

"An electrical fault which resulted in the pumps not kicking in was identified.  The fault has been rectified and the subway was fully reopened yesterday morning.

"We will monitor the situation and investigate further should there be any more issues. We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.”
