A HUNGRY drink-driver was turned in by staff at a fast food chain after she had been out with friends drowning her sorrows.

Monika Girnyte was caught by police after using the McDonald’s drive-thru in Mid Summer Place, Amesbury.

The 20-year-old drove to McDonald’s at around 2am on February 17 and a member of staff smelled alcohol on her breath.

The employee told Girnyte to park up in her Toyota Aygo and wait for her order which delayed her leaving the restaurant.

Officers arrived and arrested Girnyte. She was taken to the police station and a breath test was carried out.

It was found that she had 64mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath – the legal limit is 35.

Girnyte, of Ludgershall Road, Tidworth, admitted driving while over the limit at Salisbury magistrates’ court on Friday.

In mitigation, Paul Jones said: “On the day in question she had some rather bad news about her relationship. She found out everything was not as she was led to believe.

“She met up with her friend, had a few drinks and intended to get a taxi back.

“She had no idea why she got in her car.”

Magistrate Robert Oglesby was told that Girnyte worked in Salisbury and if she lost her licence she would have to take three buses.

Mr Jones added that this is going to be problematic and it would be challenging to keep her job.

Girnyte, wearing a floral shirt and black skirt, was banned from driving for 17 months, fined £276 and ordered to pay £85 court costs and £30 victim surcharge.
