CRIMINALS stole metal and broke into churches in a series of recent crimes across south Wiltshire.

On March 16 lead was stolen from the surgery roof in Moot Lane, Downton.

Three days later, on March 19 a young man was seen on a roof removing lead in Lower Road, Harnham.

On March 20 two men were spotted ripping lead from the roof of the pharmacy in Downton High Street.

More lead was stolen from a porch in Bishopstone on the same day.

The next day, scrap copper was stolen from a yard at St Thomas Farm in London Road, Salisbury.

St Andrew's Church at West Dean was broken into on March 20. The door was damaged but noting was stolen.

And thieves entered St Peter's Church in Fugglestone on March 21 where they stole postcards and scrawled a message on the wall.

PC Paul Greenhalgh said: “We are investigating a series of metal thefts and break-ins that have happened in the Salisbury area recently.

“At present we are keeping an open mind but there are obvious similarities between the offences.

"We will be following up on CCTV opportunities, locating possible witnesses and making visits to local scrap dealers as part of our enquiries. Anyone with information is asked to call 101.”
