CCTV has been released after a "nasty and unprovoked" attack outside a pub.

The incident happened at around 1.30am on Friday (April 20) outside The Halfway House in Wilton Road.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was leaving the pub when he was approached by an unknown man and punched once to the face, causing him to fall to the floor.

Paramedics took the victim to Salisbury District Hospital, and he was then transferred to Southampton General, where he was initially assessed as being in a critical condition.

He has been responding well to treatment and is now in a stable condition.

Police have released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the assault.

There is also a CCTV image of two women who were in the area at the time of the assault and may prove to be key witnesses.

T/DC Lauren Barnard, from Salisbury CID, said: “This was a particularly nasty unprovoked assault, which has left a man seriously ill in hospital.

“We have been carrying out enquiries, including house-to-house and examining CCTV from the area on the night in question.

“The suspect is described as male, wearing a navy-coloured baseball cap with a badge on the front, black knee-length shorts, white trainers and a dark t-shirt, which was pulled up over his face.

“We would like to hear from anyone who may have any information and may be able to help with our investigation.”

Anyone with information should call T/DC Barnard on 101. Alternatively, call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
