DRIVERS face further delays in the Southampton Road area while the McDonald's and Premier Inn development continues.

Milford Mill Road was scheduled to be closed for six weeks from April 3, opening next week.

But now Wiltshire Council has said the road will be closed for "at least a three-week extension" because of "unforeseen utility connections", and has not provided an end date for the works.

The road is closed so it can be widened, and traffic lights are being installed to improve safety at the Petersfinger railway bridge.

During the work a 280-metre stretch of Milford Mill Road, northwest of its junction with Petersfinger Road, will be closed.

The road is a well-used alternative to Southampton Road, to avoid College roundabout, and during a recent four-hour closure there was gridlock on Southampton Road and Churchill Way.

Access for residents and businesses will be maintained “where possible”, according to the highways department.
