OPINION: MP John Glen senses things are looking up for city's economy following nerve agent poisoning

As I walked around the Maltings on Saturday talking to shoppers and to business owners such as Richard at B&R Textiles, I sensed the returning optimism in the city about the long term recovery as we move on from the nerve agent attack.

I continue to welcome financial support from Wiltshire Council and the government to help those businesses most affected to weather this difficult time.

These past weeks have shown just how strong and resilient our city is and I appreciate everyone’s continued patience during the investigation and subsequent decontamination operations.

Later that day I was invited by Lady Hill to open this year’s Riding for the Disabled summer fete in Wilton.

The association has been doing life changing work in the local community for 74 years by giving disabled people of all ages the opportunity to ride and learn to look after horses.

The activities on offer build self-esteem, physical strength and confidence but, most importantly, they are fun for the participants and a source of joy and encouragement to families and carers. It was great to have the opportunity to thank over 200 volunteers at the association for all their hard work and commitment.

Looking to the week ahead, I will be delivering a keynote address at the IDX conference in my ministerial capacity. It is vital that we take opportunities to support and strengthen our world class financial services through Brexit.

On Friday I look forward to visiting Wiltshire air ambulance in Devizes and discovering more about the vital emergency service they provide for people in Wiltshire.

My schedule also includes a visit to a rural business, an advice surgery and a meeting with a local head teacher.

On Saturday afternoon I will be at the cathedral for a dual celebration – the 70th anniversary of the creation of the NHS and the 25th anniversary of Salisbury District Hospital before heading off to join constituents in the Chalke Valley.
