A MEMBER of staff at Sports Direct in Salisbury ended up on the bonnet of a car after trying to apprehend a suspected shoplifter.

Police say the incident happened at 1.45pm on Bank Holiday Monday (May 28).

The suspect jumped into a waiting silver Volkswagen Polo, which drove off at speed.

The car continued driving out of the car park and down Churchill Way West with the staff member on the bonnet, before it was blocked by another vehicle and the employee managed to jump off.

The employee, a man in his 20s, suffered minor leg injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage following the shoplifting and dangerous driving incident in Salisbury.

PC James Barrett said: "This was an incredibly dangerous incident and it is lucky that nobody was seriously hurt.

"I am appealing for anyone who was in the car park at the time and either witnessed the incident or may have dash-cam footage.

"We would also like to speak to the driver of a white Range Rover, which attempted to block the suspect car before the roundabout."

A 38-year-old woman from Andover has been arrested on suspicion of theft, assault, failing to stop and dangerous driving, and has been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Anyone with information should contact PC Barrett on 101, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
