A COMMUNITY fridge will be coming to Salisbury in December to help prevent food waste and feed those in need - and volunteers are needed.

Quench is teaming up with Edventure and local students to make the resourceful and planet-friendly idea a reality.

Instead of the normal ways in which people dispose of food, the public will be able to take their unwanted food to the newly launching community fridge, allowing the rest of the public to pick it up for free.

This will be the first course that Edventure have attempted outside of Frome, and Minke Beviss, development manager for Quench, said he would “love to see in Salisbury the impact they have made in Frome”.

Edventure is a school for community enterprise, creating businesses that assist people, the economy and nature and it hopes to expand its projects to Salisbury.

“We went to visit them last year and loved their approach, it’s very collaborative, inclusive and effective,” added Minke.

“Salisbury doesn’t have a community fridge yet, so we thought this would be a good place to start one.”

The scheme is aimed at people aged between 18 and 35 who are not currently in education or employment, who will have 10 weeks to set up the business, taking on jobs such as researching, idea gathering, branding, and finally making the fridge come to life.

The nature of the project asks recruits to be available Monday until Thursday for the whole 10 weeks, from 9.30am- 2.30pm.

The overall project will be finished by December 7, when students can show their completed product to the public.

Salisbury Library will host the fridge, which will be managed by The Pantry Partnership once the project is complete.

Thanks to the project, the students “will gain the experience of setting up a community project/business,” said Minke.

“We aim to pair students up with personal mentors and coaches so they can get the most out of the course.

“They can also get a level 3 qualification in leadership and management as we have a partnership with UWE in Bristol.”
