UNUSUAL speedwatch officers have appeared in a Wiltshire village - alongside President Trump, Theresa May and a wicked witch.

The straw-filled community speedwatch team are outside the village hall in Hindon, and are just one of 20 entries into the village's annual scarecrow competition, as part of the Hindon flower show.

Team leader of the Community Speedwatch Team in Hindon, Frank Freeman said: "These `scarecrows’ are located outside the village hall at the bottom of the High Street, a location at which Wiltshire Police will not allow our real speed watch team to operate because the traffic is not travelling fast enough.

"We beg to differ; although traffic is not as fast here as elsewhere in Hindon, it is a much more dangerous spot, situated as it is by the playground and the junction with School Lane.

"However, Wiltshire Police will not change their minds, even after we wrote to the PCC."

But Mr Freeman said the scarecrows are having "a significant effect" on speeds in the village.

He added: "Whereas it was not unusual for the Speed Indicator Device to show vehicles travelling at up to 50 mph and more, the presence of these fairly realistic figures are being mistaken for the real thing.

"As one resident rather unkindly put it: `These dummies are doing more to reduce vehicle speeds in Hindon than the dummies in Devizes (referring to Wiltshire Police)!’"
