THE VILLAGE of Durrington is gearing up for its ninth annual Sunday Funday.

Originally set up to as a charity event to raise funds for the village hall, the event has developed into a hugely popular community event, last year attracting more than 2000 visitors.

Co-founders Dion and Emma Spencer said: “It’s mainly aimed at the kids, so there’s stuff going on all afternoon, keeping them entertained and bringing the community together whilst making a few pennies for local charities.

"We are very proud to say we have raised more than £11,000 over the past eight years which we’ve be able to dish out to small local charities, groups and individuals in need.”

There will be fun and games all day, with Disco Dion leading the charge announcing events and performers.

Attractions include an abundance of stalls, face painting, bouncy castles, as well as food stalls and a bar - all mixed in with fun and games on the main arena.

As well as the Funday, the organisers added Retro in the Rec, a music event on the village recreational ground the evening before.

Dion and Emma added: “We already deliver a great event for the youngsters, but felt the grown-ups needed a treat too.

"In its three year history the evening Retro event has been super successful, it’s fabulous to see everyone singing and dancing along to live music and a disco – a perfect end to the summer break.

"The joint event is now quite a beast to organise and we couldn’t do it without the support of local businesses and top team of volunteers who help us set up and of course clear up after the events.”

Retro in the Rec takes place on the evening of Saturday, August 25 from 5.30pm to 10.30pm, followed by Sunday Funday on August, 26 from 12pm to 4pm.

All visitors need is a picnic blanket, the enthusiasm to join in and a few pounds for some of the activities, all of which helps raise vital funds for local charities.

John Todd, Chairman of Durrington Town Council said: "We are extremely lucky to have Emma, Dion and their team who put on a great weekend in our village.

"There is something for everyone and the fun and games Dion provides for the kids at the event makes for a really happy time for them.

"Our village is looking forward, not only to the Sunday Funday, but also the Retro in the Rec event the night before - I wish them the best of luck.”
