ONE of the highlights of the ceremony was the presentation to three doormen from the Chapel Nightclub whose quick thinking and first aid skills saved a woman's life.

Brendan Jeynes, Andy Collingwood and Shaun Whatley were on duty at the Salisbury venue when they heard 31-year-old Carla Wong had collapsed on the dancefloor because her heart suddenly stopped.

After assessing the situation, the doormen carried out CPR until an ambulance arrived. When she got to hospital, Carla's condition was critical and her family was told to expect the worst.

But, miraculously, she pulled through and was eventually able to go home and enjoy a normal life. Carla's sister, Kristy Newman, nominated the doormen for the People Awards and, as a finale to the ceremony, the sisters were invited onto the stage to give their thanks.

"If it wasn't for them, Carla wouldn't be here today and we will always be grateful," said Kristy.

Carla added: "I've said thank you to them so many times but it's nice to be able to say it publicly because they definitely are heroes."

The doormen had undergone extensive first aid training but said this was the first time they had dealt with an emergency of this kind.

"It's one of those situations where you just get on with it and think about it later," said Brendan.

"Carla is a lovely girl and we're just glad we were able to help her."

Shaun added: "It's been great to come today and hear some of the stories about the winners.

"It's quite humbling - we were just doing our job but there are people here who do amazing things every day of the week."
