The Boscombe Down Aviation Collection (BDAC) says it is still open for business despite the closure of Old Sarum Airfield.

The collection’s hangars are not owned by Old Sarum Airfield and house a number of historical aircraft and exhibits.

Norman Hibberd, the Collections’ Visits Manager said: “BDAC is still open for business. Closure was never an option throughout the decision making process of The Airfield Management.

“We are currently open Friday to Sunday during the winter months and we are currently seeking to expand the collection”

Old Sarum Airfield closed on October 31 after 102 years of operation.

The airfield announced its plans to close in the summer.

This came after a planning inspector turned down an appeal by Old Sarum Airfield Limited against Wiltshire Council’s decision to refuse planning permission to build 462 homes and create a “flying hub” and heritage centre, restaurant and new control tower.

A judicial review is due to take place after an appeal was lodged by the owners of the airfield.

This Saturday, BDAC will host an exhibition exploring the art of making model ships.

The event runs from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.

Members of the Society of Model Shipwrights and the American-based Nautical Research Guild will be exhibiting a selection of their work. On display will be both working models, designed to operate on the water under sail or power, and static display models.

Exhibitors will be on hand to explain how the models were made and to talk about the history of the ships they represent.

Back in August, BDAC added a Hawk Jet XX154 to its collection. The aircraft, which had previously been based at MOD Boscombe Down, was flown in by Chinook helicopter.
